Preschool Special Needs Service

What is the Preschool Special Needs Service?

An interdisciplinary team at the IWK that provides a coordinated assessment to children who have needs in two or more of the following areas: cognition, communication, fine motor and/or gross motor skills. Assessments are provided by at least two of the following team members: occupational therapist, physiotherapist, psychologist and speech-language pathologist. Following assessments, a meeting is held with the parents and health care providers involved in the child’s care.

Who can be referred?

Preschool children with delays in two or more of the following areas:

  • Cognition
  • Communication
  • Fine motor and/or gross motor skills

Who can refer?

Physicians and other health care providers

Who should be contacted with the referral?

Referrals should be sent to the Preschool Special Needs Service, Psychological Services, IWK Health Centre
